The volcano is the highest in Ecuador reaching over 6000m above sea level.
Already the roads between Ambato, Guaranda and Riobamba give you awesome sights of the volcano and the natural reserves surrounding it. If you’re lucky you can spot those rare alpaca-like wild creatures called Vicuña. Anyways, the access to get up the volcano is on the Guaranda – Riobamba road. Depending on the national park guards’ and guides’ mood and how you get along with them you can drive up to about 4800m and continue up to about 5000m on foot without a guide (if you are not a big group and not complete tourists). In that hight is the last refugio. That’s how high we went .. and it was misty. Although it wasn’t a long hike, about 45min it took the air out of us. If you want to get all the way to the peak, you’ll have to reserve a tour. It’s a hike that you can do in one day and without too much special equipment, as the path up is relatively easy (e.g. no glacier climbing etc). One guide can carry two people who pay about $150 for the fun. If you’re lucky, they say you can see the pacific ocean from the top. FUENTE MODOSALINERITO.COM
